AI in Odoo: which are the requirements for enabling it?

The essentials 

• Odoo's native AI requires a paid subscription : at least the Standard plan (The "One App Free" plan and the Community edition are excluded.)

• In Odoo Online, this Standard subscription is the only requirement: Odoo provides the AI service; no configuration is required.

• With self-hosted (on-premise) or at Odoo.sh, you must provide your own API key to an LLM provider.

The rest (version, credits, compliance) pertains to implementation, not access authorization.

Do you need the Enterprise edition to use Odoo's AI? 

Yes: the native AI layer exists only in the Enterprise edition, not in Community. The Community edition remains free and open source, but it does not include the AI app, agents, or AI Fields. With the Community edition, AI functionality requires custom development or external integrations via the API.

In practice, the distinction between “Community” and “Enterprise” is reflected primarily in the subscription tier, the plan you are signing up for, as detailed below.

Which Odoo subscription plan provides access to AI? 

Native AI features are included starting with the Standard. The "One App Free" plan does not provide access to it.

Pricing per user is listed in euros for France on Odoo’s official pricing page (odoo.com/pricing). These rates vary by region and current promotions; we recommend checking them at the time of your quote rather than relying on a fixed figure.

Do I need to provide my own AI API key? 

It depends on your hosting set-up; this is the point that's most often misunderstood.

• Odoo Online : No. The only requirement is a Standard (or higher) subscription. Odoo provides the AI service directly; you don't need to configure any keys on your end.

• Self-hosted (on-premise) or Odoo.sh : Yes. You must provide your own API key from an LLM provider, which you'll need to enter in Odoo's AI settings.

In fact, the Odoo 19 documentation devotes an entire page to configuring AI API keys, a sign that this setup primarily applies to databases not hosted by Odoo. In this case, you're responsible for choosing the model and monitoring usage.

Which version of Odoo should I use? 

The full AI experience is documented for Odoo 19. This is the version where AI becomes a cross-functional building block: contextual agents, AI fields, AI-driven server actions, voice transcription of meetings, and writing assistance for email templates.

Earlier versions already offered individual modules (scanning of supplier invoices, predictive lead scoring), but without the agent configuration layer that was recently introduced. If you’re interested in the features listed above, plan your upgrade to Odoo 19.

What other costs are there besides the subscription fee? 

Two additional cost items may be added, depending on the features used.

LLM Usage, when you use your own API key (self-hosted / Odoo.sh): the tokens are billed directly by the model provider, outside of Odoo. The amount depends on the volume of requests and the model selected.

1. IAP Credits (In-App Purchase), for certain assisted features billed on a pay-as-you-go basis, for example, scanning supplier invoices or automatically enriching contacts (Partner Autocomplete). These services operate using prepaid credits, which are separate from the AI/LLM layer.

Keep this in mind: the subscription grants access; actual usage may result in pay-as-you-go billing, either through the LLM provider or via IAP credits.

What compliance issues should you check before enabling AI in Odoo? 

In most cases, enabling AI involves sending data to a third-party model. Before deploying to production, there are four checks that should be performed as part of best practices:

• GDPR : Legal basis for processing, possible transfer outside the EU, retention period.

• Personal and Confidential Information : Identify what information is actually being sent in the prompts (PII, sensitive business data).

• EU AI Act : Article 4 requires a employee training on the responsible use of AI.

• Provider Terms and Conditions : Policy on the use of prompts for the selected LLM (OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, etc.).

These points do not affect technical activation, but they are essential for safe and proper use.
